Clinical Significance

Valproic acid test is used to monitor the amount of Valproic acid in the blood and to check if the drug level is within the therapeutic range. Overdose of this drug leads to toxicity and affects the central nervous system, leading to coma, confusion, dizziness, hallucinations, irritability, headache, ataxia, cerebral edema and eventually death.
